Vienna Awakens

Enjoy an afternoon of late Classical symphonic works composed in Vienna between 1799 and 1815.

Sunday, February 21st
Venue and time TBA

Step into the sound world of the early nineteenth century as our period-instrument orchestra brings three remarkable symphonies to life. Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 opens the evening with wit and audacity, a young composer's bold announcement that he was ready to claim Haydn and Mozart's symphonic legacy as his own. Franz Krommer's Symphony No. 3, a rare gem too seldom heard today, reveals why he was once one of Vienna's most celebrated composers, prized for his elegant melodies and masterful orchestration. Closing the program, Schubert's youthful Symphony No. 2 bursts with the melodic generosity and energy of a nineteen-year-old already writing with astonishing confidence. Together, these three works trace a vivid musical journey through Vienna's golden age—don't miss this rare chance to hear it exactly as it was meant to sound.

Winners of the fourth annual High School Baroque Artist Residency Competition will also perform with the Raleigh Camerata on Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C Major. Hear the delightful sounds of classical flutes, oboes, bassoons, trumpets and horns with a full string orchestra.
